The engagement took place in Manila Bay in the Philippines, and was the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War. This war ended any pretense of Spanish Naval influential presence in the world. However, not only was it the end of an era for Spain, but 1898 also signaled, in historical terms, of the rapid end of all European naval dominance in the world.
