In some cases, they could bowl but never focused on that aspect of their game and were encouraged to bowl more in the nets as well as in the game by the captain/coach or management. Lots of players didn't mind picking this task up since it would add their value as a player to the team and help the team out. A few good examples of players who were decent batsman (or real good batsman) who picked up bowling or kept up with it would include Ravindra Jadeja, Yuvraj Singh of India, Chris Gayle of West Indies. Sanath Jayasuriya is an interesting story as he was sent up the order to open the batting and attack as a tactic by Arjuna Ranatunga who was the captain of Sri Lanka in the mid to late 90s. The gamble had seemed to pay-off and Jayasuriya never looked back, but he always contributed as a left arm spinner and picked up many wickets.
