Notice about the new release 2019-08-13: UTF-8 support with argument utf8. Support for multiple pages fixed.
Notice about the new release 2019-01-10: The backaddress has been fixed for the institute. Own settings are ignored. The encoding has to be latin-1 for backwards compatibility. On Debian machines installed by IST the MPI for Informatics letter templates are provided by the mpiletter package. You can find them at:

	/usr/share/doc/texmf/mpi/template-mpiletter-inf-de-long.tex
    /usr/share/doc/texmf/mpi/template-mpiletter-inf-de.tex
    /usr/share/doc/texmf/mpi/template-mpiletter-inf-de-UTF-8.tex  
	/usr/share/doc/texmf/mpi/template-mpiletter-inf-en.tex

Alternatively, you can take them from template-mpiletter-inf-de-long.tex, template-mpiletter-inf-de.tex , template-mpiletter-inf-de-UTF-8.tex and template-mpiletter-inf-en.tex.
If you run

      pdflatex template-mpiletter-inf-de-long.tex
	  pdflatex template-mpiletter-inf-de.tex
	  pdflatex template-mpiletter-inf-de-UTF-8.tex
	  pdflatex template-mpiletter-inf-en.tex

the result should match template-mpiletter-inf-de-long.pdf , template-mpiletter-inf-de.pdf , template-mpiletter-inf-de-UTF-8.pdf and template-mpiletter-inf-en.pdf. respectively.
The Debian package mpilatex includes everything you need to actually build a letter with (pdf)LaTeX. On other environments you might need the required class file mpiletter-inf.cls and the referred the english MPI-INF signet. and its german MPI-INF version .
