MPI Informatics Building Model v1.0 - Frequently Asked Questions and
Feedback
|
- Q1: If there is a bug of any sort, how should I report it?
Answer: There is a list of known
bugs, if you find another unknown problem, we will put it on the
list. If we have enough resources we will correct it for the next release.
Please, be patient, the data are provided for free and for non-commercial research.
Therefore, there is no immediate technical support provided as for commercial products.
- Q2: What about the future of the project?
Answer: The project will be continued to some extent. Currently,
we plan to release the software used for the conversion of this data
set from 3D Studio MAX via VRML to PBRT and extended VRML format.
Another improvement concerns the dynamization of the model - simple
animations of the building will be supported with several
examples. We provide a preliminary video [AVI]
showing an animation of the
parametrized MPI Informatics Building Model.
- Q3: What about measured BRDFs?
Answer: We plan to have measured BRDF or even BTF data for
geometric data. Unfortunately, these measurements are quite
expensive and time consuming. At the time of release in
December 2009, there was no way to get referenced BRDF/BTF
data.
- Q4: Do you plan to realize other virtual reconstructions?
Answer: No, as mentioned in the research report, our intention is to
provide the dataset for research. If one out of ten researchers could
provide a valuable dataset to the public, then the number of datasets
would be sufficient for the research community. So, if you did not yet
release any dataset for public use, it is perhaps your turn.
- Q5: May I somehow support this project?
Answer: Yes, any valuable support is welcome. This involves the correction
of known problems with the geometry in 3D Studio MAX, the data
completion, the conversion to other data formats, financial
donations (required for BRDF acquisition), etc. The contact persons
are Vlastimil Havran and Karol Myszkowski at the MPII.
