7. Validation of Global Illumination
and Rendering Solutions
7.1 Experiments with the Atrium Scene
7.1.1 Simplified Model

Figure 7.1: An atrium of the Research Quadrangle at the University
of Aizu:
a) photograph,
b) rendering based on the simplified atrium model.
7.1.2 Complete Model
Figure 7.3: Settings used for experimental comparison of the
atrium images displayed at the CRT device against the real-world view.
The subject observed the atrium through an aperture which limited the field
of view to the one similar to the displayed images.
Figure 7.4: Rendered image using the measured BRDF and more complete atrium model.
Note that colors in the photograph in Figure 7.1a are too yellowish in respect to the real world atrium because the film with daylight color compensation was used (photographs obtained using different types of films and digital camera are available on the atrium project Web pages). Similar colors obtained in Figure 7.1b result from "artistic" tuning of the surface reflectance parameters which were performed to get an image as similar as possible to the photograph in Figure 7.1a. On the other hand, colors obtained for Figure 7.4 subjectively match closer to the real world atrium. In the latter case, physically-based lighting simulation and rendering techniques were applied, and the manual tuning of rendering parameters was not performed.
A copy of the atrium project Web pages
disseminated through the Internet for public use is included on this CD-ROM.
